What is the appropriate behavior for a man or a woman in the midst of this world, where each person is clinging to his piece of debris? What's the proper salutation between people as they pass each other in this flood?

I'm idly reading some words of the Buddha as I look for a particular quote which was a revelation (well not really so much a revelation as a reminder) that I had on waking up from a nap today.
I can't find the exact text right now but the gist is "desire is the root of misery; he who wants nothing will never lose anything."
I guess sometimes I want something so badly it hurts me and I need to realize that if I just relax and not worry about it I will be much happier.
