[02:12] <JarickCWAL> They're different beasts and deserve that differentiation.

[02:19] <JarickCWAL> Once upon a time there was an eldritch abomination against god, nature, and harmony that found itself isolated and relatively alone in a universe that he found cared nothing for him.
[02:20] <JarickCWAL> It had severed its ties with the family and friends of its birth, who now thought it dead, and it had been burned by people with frequency-- so it felt a bit of solitude would probably do it well.
[02:21] <JarickCWAL> But it also knew that something was wrong with its mind, because he dwelled alternately in mania and despair and knew them to be... perhaps natural states of mind for what he had become, but unnatural by comparison to its previous way of being.
[02:22] <Simon Kerrick> Trust me when I say I can't be paying more attention.
[02:22] <JarickCWAL> He also knew he could draw with impunity upon powers that would corrupt mortal minds, bodies, and souls, so long as he observed a few proper precautions, and became wise in the ways of the Outer Gods the Great Old Ones, and the Elder Gods who put them away.
[02:22] <Simon Kerrick> And what gave him confidence he could draw upon them with impunity?
[02:23] <JarickCWAL> In the course of his studies, he learned many tongues, becomign fluent in Greek, Latin, Chinese, Arabic, Hyperborean, and even the languages of things that once walked the Earth but had voices no human mouth could replicate.
[02:24] <JarickCWAL> And in the course of his studies, he learned of the artefacts known as Grimoires.
[02:25] * Simon Kerrick listens.
[02:25] <JarickCWAL> He learned that forming a pact with one offered both power and knowledge, but he had learned also that to gain power is to become ensconced in using it-- but there were only a handful of teachers who could match what he had already gained, and none of them would take a khadi as a student.
[02:27] <Simon Kerrick> A Khadi?
[02:27] <JarickCWAL> Like a lich, but different. Undying, rather than undead.
[02:27] <JarickCWAL> Madder, generally.
[02:28] <JarickCWAL> The young khadi also learned that many Grimoires are engaged in their own endless wars-- some warring to preserve for the harmony of the Elder Gods, others battling for the madness and ecstasy that thrived in the Time of Glory, when the Great Old Ones and the Outer Gods were ascendant and resplendant.
[02:29] * Simon Kerrick listens, interested.
[02:29] <JarickCWAL> He had no wish to get caught up in such a battle, so he searched for a Grimoire that he thought he might control with his unique brand of wit and charm, that he would remain its master and not allow it to gain power over his waking and dreaming life.
[02:29] <Simon Kerrick> So Grimoires are dangerous?
[02:29] <JarickCWAL> In time, he narrowed down his options, and decided that he would hunt the Grimoire known as the Seven Cryptical Books of Hsan.
[02:30] * Simon Kerrick listens. "Ignore the questions. They can wait."
[02:30] * JarickCWAL nodsnods, goes on:
[02:31] <JarickCWAL> The Seven Cryptical Books of Hsan were known to be in the Temples of Ulthar, a great city of the Dreamlands. Gaining access to the temple is no small story in and of itself, but it will suffice to say that in time he gained access to its inner halls and libraries, masquerading as a penitent monk.
[02:33] <JarickCWAL> What he expected to find was a wise sage, someone whose apparent age belied the depth of their wisdom, who had turned from the life of war and struggle and gained an enlightened perspective on the cosmos and her place in it.
[02:33] <Simon Kerrick> And what did he find?
[02:35] <JarickCWAL> What he found was a lost girl whose wisdom was born in pain, who had quit her war because of the cost it had exacted from everyone she had cared for, who would have been drowning in despair if she hadn't chosen the comfortable numbness of a dead cloister instead.
[02:36] <JarickCWAL> He saw a kindred soul, and though he thought he had lost his sense of compassion when his heart had been torn from his chest, he found he identified with her more than he wished to.
[02:36] <Simon Kerrick> ...So the neuroses... the scars you speak of... Nevermind, bad time for questions.
[02:36] * Simon Kerrick gestures for him to continue.
[02:37] * JarickCWAL takes and lets a breath go, remembering
[02:38] <Simon Kerrick> How do you know all of this, Jacob?
[02:38] <JarickCWAL> Didn't you just say this was a bad time for questions? >:3
[02:38] <Simon Kerrick> Yes, but I take pauses for what they are.
[02:38] <JarickCWAL> Heh.
[02:39] <JarickCWAL> That I can touch on later, but that's complicated.
[02:40] <JarickCWAL> ...acting unbidden on an impulse, the khadi changed his mind.
[02:42] <JarickCWAL> Rather than suborn her and escape from the Temple by force, he decided to see what was within his power to do. The Grimoire he found knew him instantly for what he was; he could not have hidden it without tremendous effort, so he did not bother to do so.
[02:43] <JarickCWAL> Trusting to the inertia she had accumulated over a thousand years of silence, he moved openly. Asked questions of her that a penitent would never have thought to ask of a holy text. Debated with her. Made her angry for the first time in centuries, and was unrepentant.
[02:43] <JarickCWAL> Then he excused himself, and left her in peace, only to return the next day.
[02:45] <Simon Kerrick> ....
[02:45] <JarickCWAL> This continued for quite some time. He had a way of being utterly infuriating while being completely and sincerely respectful, and over time he could sense that the irritation she felt in his presence became grudging attention, then uncertain appreciation, then respect.
[02:46] <JarickCWAL> She suspected he wanted her for what she could offer him, but was puzzled that he never asked it of her. It would not have been the first time she had been petitioned by a petitioner, nor the third, nor the twentieth, nor the hundredth, and one day she asked him how long he intended to keep up the charade to get into her confidence.
[02:48] <JarickCWAL> His first response was to ask: "Well, has it worked yet?"
[02:48] * Simon Kerrick cracks a smile at this.
[02:49] <JarickCWAL> She laughed, but he went on. "You're interesting company. I learn more from you than from the temple masters just by talking with you." He had no interest in securing a tool from the library for his own use; any impulses he might have once had towards the idea had been ablated beneath the weeks of companionship.
[02:50] <JarickCWAL> "But, if you're interested in a change of scenery," he added, a smile on his lips, "I can provide that. We can continue our chats without you getting pestered so often. How long has it been since you've seen the stars, anyway?"
[02:51] <JarickCWAL> It would be a lie to say she'd forgotten what the night sky had looked like, but she admitted it had been many years. He nodded, pressed the issue no further, and redirected the conversation to the trivia they had been speaking of in minutes prior.
[02:52] <JarickCWAL> A week passed in similar idleness, then she asked him to take her away-- and he obliged.
[02:53] <JarickCWAL> It was less eventful of an escape than he'd anticipated it initially being, but he'd not planned on having the assistance of his kidnappee in getting away.
[02:55] <JarickCWAL> The quarters he'd established for his own use were a little cozier than the ones she was accustomed to, but she was used to quiet places and it wasn't much of a change. He left her to her own business much of the time, but when he returned, they would have another one of their long talks, and page by page-- so to speak-- she opened up.
[02:56] * Simon Kerrick nods.
[02:57] <JarickCWAL> He shared with her stories of the world that had come and gone since she'd blinked, and of the strange house filled with peculiar people he'd found. She told him stories of her own memory, of sorcerers and Witches and abominations and battles-- not to mention the sutras of the Maidens, scribed on her heart and dear to her.
[02:58] * Simon Kerrick listens. "The Sutras of Maidens."
[02:58] <JarickCWAL> She taught him how to beckon the gods, who would have fled from his countenance without the lessons she imparted. He gave her things to laugh about, dread, hope for, and be angry about.
[03:00] <JarickCWAL> She mentored him in the Elements' Fivefold Fist and the Rondo of the Last Man. He provoked her into caring about the world, fearful of being burned by it though she remained, and pointed her a path to a place she would be welcomed if she ever chose to go.
[03:03] <JarickCWAL> But then a traitor, who had been thought an ally if not a friend to them both dealt the khadi a wound he could not heal. The only injury a khadi may not, in time, recover from, is a blow to their hidden heart, and the traitor left a poison that would unmake him entirely.
[03:04] <JarickCWAL> The khadi chose to journey towards his heart-- frozen between beats, and where his soul was kept-- and found that the chains of fate that bound his heart to his essence were beyond saving. He could not undo what had been done, for both the khadi and his soul had grown beyond their original specifications-- ever-so-slightly, they were their own people.
[03:05] <Simon Kerrick> I'm staggered to say this, but I have had a similar experience recently.
[03:05] <JarickCWAL> Alone, they could not survive-- so the khadi made a clever choice, and gave of himself what functions he needed to give his soul a life, that one of them would persist in the world and perhaps complete the work that had been done.

[03:06] * Simon Kerrick smiles at Jacob, and bids him to continue.
[03:07] <JarickCWAL> His soul persisted for a time after, but his soul found itself mortal: unable to grasp as far as it once had, and limited as most humans are in the world.
[03:08] <JarickCWAL> The Grimoire, helpless to assist him-- for the work that had created him was beyond her power-- was relieved to see that he persisted. She had come to fancy him again, and wished to take another Master; as a khadi, he had rebuffed her every time, calling himself her Keeper rather than her Master.
[03:09] * Simon Kerrick nods. "Keeper."
[03:10] <JarickCWAL> As a mortal, she reasoned, he would need her power and her assistance to further the designs he had on the world and the cosmos-- but the mortal refused her again. He refused to become more than her Keeper, for if he became her Master, she would also become his, and he would join a war he had no interest in fighting-- if not immediately, then in time, inevitably.
[03:10] * Simon Kerrick listens to these statements of ownership and association almost somberly, and nods quietly.
[03:12] <JarickCWAL> In time, though, the mortal made a frightening discovery: the khadi yet lived, and it had designs on his life.
[03:13] <Simon Kerrick> They were not the same person?
[03:14] <Simon Kerrick> ...Of course they were not. Go on.
[03:15] <JarickCWAL> It seemed as immortal as ever, and though he had no shortage of defenders, the human found himself unwilling to risk others' lives for something he was ultimately responsible for. Thus, he chose to gamble with himself and pursued the Scholomance, a school of magic taught by The Devil. The khadi chased him there, to hound him-- but once someone is signed to the Devil's book, they are under his protection until classes are over.
[03:16] <JarickCWAL> The human threw himself at The Devil's tests, remembering what he had gained and lost, defying the school to remember what he had forgotten: himself.
[03:17] * Simon Kerrick looks at JarickCWAL.
[03:17] *** JarickCWAL is a Caucasian male in casual clothes who doesn't look the thirty years of his age, with short brown hair, eyes the blue-on-blue of melange addiction, and a couple days' worth of scraggle on his face.

[03:17] <JarickCWAL> And as the session progressed, he came to see that the khadi was dying. Not from any sickness, but because it was always going to do so-- and that the khadi wanted nothing more than the continuation of its legacy.
[03:18] <JarickCWAL> The human found that it was quite content to be mortal and play on a lesser stage, thank you very much, but he knew that many people would grieve if he were simply to pass completely from memory--
[03:19] <JarickCWAL> --so he met the thing that wanted its legacy continued, and bequeathed upon it the Name they both had worn. It had always been a poor fit for him-- a glove that was too loose or too tight-- but it perked its recipient right up.
[03:19] <JarickCWAL> Made it whole, in a new and different way.
[03:20] <JarickCWAL> Gave the disintegrating mishmash of ideas a sense of what it was, what it had been, and what it could be if it so desired.
