[22:53] * Jennifer Amuro has painted tiny sections from a map of Tokyo onto Matsumi's hands. The streets, roads, and subway lines are all to scale, accurate, and incredibly small and delicate. Each fingertip is another miniature part of the city itself.

[03:07] <Yaijinden> I was... nineteen or so. In college, because that's where I was expected to be and I had no idea of what else was an option. Doing poorly in classes. But everything started off okay because the girl I'd been seeing since high school was there with me, so I could put up with anything miserable.
[03:08] <Yaijinden> Except she didn't feel the same way about me by the time spring semester rolled around, and the crowd she was running with had no room for anyone who wasn't willing to delve into their vices.
[03:09] <Yaijinden> So she dumped me because she was already cheating on me, leaving me with nothing I understood to be worth pursuing in life.
[03:10] <Yaijinden> The faith of my fathers offered no reasons for me to keep living. I had no direction, no teachers, and the sense that I was a sparkling, shiny disappointment for my family. Nowhere to run to. Nowhere to hide.
[03:12] <Yaijinden> Suicide seemed like a reasonable answer, but after I'd broken into the campus library and stared twelve stories down... I stepped back from the edge. I didn't have the nerve.
[03:13] <Yaijinden> So I sat back and I swore and I cursed in silence because I wanted desperately to care about something but couldn't find anything worth my compassion-- so what good was this heart of mine if all it was to do was cause me pain?
[03:13] <Yaijinden> And then something came to offer me a way out.
[03:14] <Yaijinden> I don't know how it found me. I still don't know its name, though I now know some of the epithets it went under. Annihilation. Tzl-Ha. The End of All Things.
[03:16] <Yaijinden> And I had never seen something like it before, because in the States, they were quite skilled at keeping the people ignorant-- until the recent New York incident, anyway.
[03:16] <Indigo> Recent New York Incident...?
[03:17] <Yaijinden> That's another story.
[03:17] * Indigo nods
[03:17] <Yaijinden> I thought, but never believed, in the literal existence proposed to me by the Protestants of angels and demons and God and the Devil; this was none of those things. It was Other, entirely.
[03:19] <Yaijinden> Why did it pick me of all the desperate souls out there? I still don't know. I doubt I ever will. But it told me I could be free of my heart, free from all the expectations I'd ever had of myself, and all I had to do was obey when it required me.
[03:19] <Yaijinden> So I said yes.
[03:21] <Yaijinden> And then it reached into my chest and tore my heart out. Far from a proper cardioectomy, but proper cardioectomies are for things embodied in the here and now.
[03:21] <Yaijinden> And just like that, I was free to go as I pleased-- and the first thing I did was take a header off of the library roof, twelve stories down.

[03:25] <Yaijinden> I survived, of course, and I had adventures of terrible sorts afterward that eventually led me here-- and from there, you mostly know the story.

[03:27] <Yaijinden> Not a pretty start, but I figure just about everyone comes into the world naked, bloody, and screaming. Once you're through that-- y'know?

[03:28] <Indigo> Still, on one hand it's painful to know that's the reason why. On the other, it did bring you here.
[03:29] <Indigo> And so many people care about you.
[03:29] <Yaijinden> I have been improved vastly by the quality of people I've known over the past many years.

[03:31] <Yaijinden> Yourself included. It was a long time before I could believe that I hadn't tricked or deceived or flattered that affection out of people, but I did, and things have been looking up since.
