[00:04] <Yaijinden> There are some people who believe that the Warp was once a relatively peaceful place, filled with strange things and separated from causal reality by a thick veil.

[00:05] <Yaijinden> Once, the warp was peaceful, but by the dawn of human civilization, it had not been that way for a long time.

[00:08] <Yaijinden> The second is thousands of lost human colonies have forgotten where they came from-- their ability to travel between the stars was suddenly gone-- and the thinking machines they had once relied upon had turned upon their once-masters.
[00:09] <Yaijinden> Which is not to say that humans were the only alien species out there-- because they certainly weren't. The xenos, as they came to be known, were almost united in their disinterest in humans as anything but slaves or food, or sometimes slave food.
[00:10] <Yaijinden> The years bled into decades bled into centuries into millenia and then into darkness.
[00:10] * Anthony Suthers listens, captivated.
[00:11] <Yaijinden> Then, one person-- who was spoken of only as the Emperor of Mankind, for he would allow no other name or title-- rose and united Earth under his banner in a campaign of bloody conquest.

[00:12] <Yaijinden> To look upon the Emperor was to know that he was the Emperor. More than any one man, more than any thousand. Skilled in dead sciences and the gentle manipulation of powers no mere mortal could think to touch and be unharmed by.

[00:13] <Yaijinden> The Emperor brought a new credo: that religion was a false salvation that bred only hostility, and one of the root causes of all human suffering.

[00:14] <Yaijinden> He created a new order that cast aside primitive superstitions and valued skepticism and empricism, and wished to bring it to the stars...

Young children-- boys, necessarily-- who proved themselves worthy were adopted into the Astartes to serve a greater calling, given organ and cybernetic grafts that elevated them beyond the average human, and trained to killing capacity.

[00:25] <Yaijinden> Most did not care for the Imperium, and their worlds and people were brutalized until they surrendered.
[00:25] <Yaijinden> Fields churned to mud. Millions slain.
[00:25] <Yaijinden> Billions, really.
[00:26] * Indigo casts a gaze to Suthers again.
[00:26] <Anthony Suthers> But... to look upon the Emperor was to KNOW he was the Emperor. How couls this happen?
[00:26] <Anthony Suthers> How sad.
[00:26] <Yaijinden> The Emperor was just one man. He could not lead every attack, every charge.
[00:27] <Yaijinden> And the Emperor demanded that they abandon their way of life, accept a yoke in exchange for protection they quite possibly never thought they needed, and abandon themselves to the Imperium's governance-- overseen by much smaller-hearted men.
[00:28] <Raihosha> The bureaucracy required to run such an operation.
[00:28] <Yaijinden> Politics, you see. To become an Imperial Governor was a position that required only that the world tithe what the Imperium demanded; the Administratum cared not what else they did to them.
[00:29] * MusicArtisan is away 
[00:29] <Yaijinden> The Emperor might have worried to see this, but what was he to do? He had a galaxy to conquer. He chose to mind his wars first.
[00:29] <Anthony Suthers> He did what was necessary.
[00:30] <Yaijinden> Until the point he called his work done and returned to Terra, disappearing to work on a project of highest secrecy.
[00:30] * Anthony Suthers nods, bidding continuation.
[00:30] <Yaijinden> He appointed his son Horus as Warmaster, to continue the Crusade without him and finish the job he had started.
[00:31] <Yaijinden> And for a time, the Crusade proceded-- the Primarchs jockeying with one another for prestige, the Army playing against the Navy, the governors breaking the backs of the people.
[00:31] * something flies high through the night sky, leaving sonic booms in it's wake
[00:32] * Anthony Suthers sighs.
[00:32] <Yaijinden> But then, on one conquest, Horus was wounded by a thing of blackest evil-- a weapon poisoned with no mortal toxin.
[00:33] <Yaijinden> The greatest science of the Imperium could not mend this thing-- they knew not what it was-- and in desperation, and trusting in treasonous counsel, his loyal Astartes brought him to a nearby world that hoped to heal him by their faith and magic.
[00:34] <Yaijinden> That is when things tipped to the worst.
[00:34] <Yaijinden> You remember when I the Warp, yes?
[00:34] <Yaijinden> Mentioned the Warp.
[00:34] <Anthony Suthers> Yes, I do.
[00:35] <Yaijinden> The Imperium, in its arrogance, thought it merely an alternate dimension full of strangeness and danger. Their ships travelled through it, navigating by blind faith and guided by psychics-- psykers, as they called them-- who could sense the vaguaries of the place.
[00:36] <Yaijinden> Their ships had to be specially shielded, because the Warp could-- by casual contact-- create horrors within a ship's hull, or turn plating into gelatin, or air into mind-rending terror and hate.
[00:36] <Anthony Suthers> ...Chaos.
[00:37] <Yaijinden> Chaos, as it would be called later.
[00:37] <Anthony Suthers> Yes... that's what I meant. >.>
[00:38] <Yaijinden> There were fathomless intelligences lurking within the Warp, beings who had once crossed over to the physical world by acts of worship, bleak rites, pain, and madness...
[00:38] * Indigo twitches.
[00:38] <Indigo> How did he wield that blade without going mad?
[00:39] <Yaijinden> Things of the Warp can be contained, with the proper knowledge-- knowledge that had been stamped out of the memory of the Imperium by their strict atheistic monoculture.
[00:40] <Yaijinden> Horus was delivered into their gentle ministrations.
[00:41] <Anthony Suthers> Into these beings' hands? So if they had simply obeyed the Emperor, this would never have happened?
[00:41] <Yaijinden> If they had obeyed him, they would have lost their lord.
[00:41] <Raihosha> You could ask him, Indigo.
[00:41] <Yaijinden> The Crusade would have crushed to a halt for years-- decades, even.
[00:42] <Yaijinden> The Emperor's sons were diverse, and Horus was the one they all mutually respected. Nobody would have been able to succeed him.
[00:43] <Yaijinden> And the Emperor had been out of contact for decades by that point.
[00:43] <Indigo> Like I need another reason for Solarchos to despise me
[00:44] * Anthony Suthers twitches. "Just---Just keep going."
[00:45] <Yaijinden> They call what happened next the Heresy. Horus stoked the fires of rebellion in his brother Primarchs, finding those who were dissatisfied with their father's reign, who rejected the faithless Imperial Truth, or who could be corrupted by darker powers.
[00:46] <Raihosha> I don't think he despises you currently.
[00:46] <Anthony Suthers> ......
[00:46] <Yaijinden> After he had gathered eight others, he sprang a trap for those whom he knew he could not turn-- within his own Astartes, then a second trap for his brother Legions.
[00:47] <Yaijinden> Horus declared that the Emperor intended to set himself up as a God over humanity, and rallied forces to retake Earth from its erstwhile master.
[00:47] <Indigo> I wouldn't be surprised if he did, that man knows how to hold a grudge.
[00:48] <Anthony Suthers> And did Horus... Who won?
[00:48] <Yaijinden> It came down to the line.
[00:48] <Yaijinden> Horus made his way to Terra.
[00:49] <Yaijinden> He was first intercepted by one other Primarch, who managed to wound him before Horus killed him-- and then the Emperor himself fought Horus.
[00:50] * Anthony Suthers shakes his head, sadly.
[00:50] <Yaijinden> Horus was slain utterly, but the Emperor was dealt a mortal wound. His dying orders were to fasten him into the keystone of what is now known as the Golden Throne, where he remains sustained by unrepairable life support and the sacrifice of a thousand psykers an hour.
[00:50] <Raihosha> He can hold a grudge, but he is also willing to forgive.
[00:50] <Yaijinden> There is no motion from him for ten thousand years, and the Imperium he has built rots with his body.
[00:51] <Anthony Suthers> But... But Humanity?
[00:51] <Yaijinden> The Traitor Legions retreat to the depths of Chaos, where they are mostly absorbed and twisted into the madness of the Warp.

[00:58] <Yaijinden> Technological data is divvied out on a need-to-know basis, and much of what was considered cutting-edge by the time of the Heresy is now lostech.

[00:59] <Yaijinden> Y'see, there's one other complication.
[00:59] <Anthony Suthers> It will be terrible now, and society might need to be lilke a body cast, but in the end, it will all be worth it.
[00:59] <Yaijinden> The only way that humanity can navigate through the Warp is because the psykers can feel his radiant presence through it-- almost-dead though he may be, his spirit still radiates like a beacon.

[01:00] <Raihosha> But I recall an example of Japanese sword making... the religious observances that grew up around the process were part of the quality control.
[01:00] <Yaijinden> Nobody knows how the Golden Throne-- the machine that supports his life-- works. Nobody knows how to repair it.
[01:00] <Yaijinden> It has been breaking down for millennia. Should it ever fail, Humanity will be unable to travel the warp once again-- isolated, as in the dark age.
[01:01] <Yaijinden> And the Emperor was a singular man. There will be nobody to replace him.
