[23:31] <Yaiko> Did you know that, theologically, Buddhist practice doesn't intend its practitioners to gain good karma for the purposes of favorable rebirth?

[23:32] <Yaiko> Or, I should say, certain forms.

[23:33] <Yaiko> Religious studies sorts classify Buddhist sects into four major branches-- Theravada, Mahayana, Tibetan, and Ch'an/Zen.
[23:35] <Yaiko> Mahayana practice kind of encompasses Tibetan and Ch'an, though the latter two go off in other directions that "pure" Mahayanists are frowny-face about. What all three of them generally-mostly agree on, though, is that enlightenment can be had in any life.
[23:35] <Matsumi Kaze> you have a very interesting song there, little one
[23:35] <Yaiko> Where they define enlightenment as Awakening, as the Buddha awakened to the reality of things.

[23:37] <Yaiko> Karma is the result of action-interaction in the world. People call it good or bad because it can be seen as "pleasant" or "hurtful", and it is generally believed that if a person dies with a lot of either kind, they will re-emerge as something more blessed or cursed.

[23:37] <Matsumi Kaze> you could say that....
[23:37] <Matsumi Kaze> I'm sure you hear the tree's song
[23:38] <Chloe> I do...and it likes me
[23:38] <Celeste> What goes around as they say?

[23:38] <Yaiko> Terrible person? Welcome to several spans of existence as a beast, or an asura, or a ghost, or one of the tortured dead. Good person? Welcome to a pleasant stay as a deva, or a god, or a being of bliss.

[23:38] <Yaiko> But the thing about both "sides" of the wheel is that no state, damned or exalted, lasts.

[23:39] <Yaiko> It just keeps going, up and down and down and up. Samsara, the kharmic wheel.
[23:40] <Yaiko> Energy, karma, action, bound up together, combining and recombining in a thousand-thousand ways.
[23:42] <Yaiko> People attribute "suchness" to the various phenomena of the world, call it substantial and lasting and abiding, when in actuality that stability is just an illusion.
[23:43] <Yaiko> And the energy of thinking beings, put forward into perpetuating that illusion, feeds into the creation of more karma. Good and bad alike.
[23:44] <Yaiko> Thinking beings strive towards illusions, believing them to be true and lasting, and Suffer-- as Buddhists call it-- when they cannot have what they are so certain they need.
[23:45] <Celeste> So seeking karma isn't the grand goal of life as many believe?
[23:45] <Celeste> They forget enlightenment?
[23:45] <Yaiko> Or, much more commonly, they mistake bliss for what they are supposed to be seeking.
[23:46] <Celeste> Then if not bliss, what should one seek?
[23:46] <Yaiko> Good karma doesn't hurt, but if you work towards the goal of accumulating karma because you believe that's what you should be doing, you're clinging to an externality.
[23:47] <Yaiko> And there are a few sutras where the Buddha says that a certain current state of positive-ish karma is necessary to even start the Practice, as it were.
[23:48] <Yaiko> Not human? You're either not in the frame where you're experiencing suffering to remember that it exists, or enduring too much to be able to conceive of existence without suffering.
[23:49] * Matsumi Kaze listens
[23:49] <Yaiko> Not born in the right period of time to hear the teachings? Tough luck, but the teachings will be revealed again. Eventually. It might be an age and a day, and it won't be this life that hears it, but that's how that goes.
[23:51] <Yaiko> Not in a spiritual state where you care? Ouch, but, well, again, there will eventually be another chance. There's all of forever ahead in your next life.
[23:52] <Yaiko> Good karma helps you set upon the practice, motivates you to seek the teachings out, helps shape you such that you're receptive to them.
[23:53] <Yaiko> But, ultimately, the idea is to realize precisely what all of this karma action is and how it goes down-- and in understanding, remove yourself from the tug and pull of the flow, and the suffering that is inherently attendant to it.
[23:54] <Yaiko> The layfolk experiences something terrible, questions what they did to deserve it, is bitter or not bitter as per their nature, and perhaps sees something to work towards.
[23:56] <Yaiko> The ordained experiences something good, or terrible, tries to understand how -they- are reacting to the changes they're seeing, whether the Feels they have comes from fear, desire, or hate, and works (or doesn't work?) to diminish the amount of impact that event has upon their person.
[23:56] <Yaiko> The master knows that there is no person to which blessing and calamity strikes.
[23:57] <Yaiko> Have you heard the parable of the chariot?
[23:57] * Celeste shakes her head
[23:57] <Yaiko> Metaphor of the chariot, I suppose.

[00:01] <Yaiko> Is a chariot the horses pulling it? Is a chariot the wheels, or the axle, upon which it rides? Is it the yoke? Is it the platform?

[00:02] <Yaiko> If you took a chariot apart, screws and pegs and wood and metal and all, and laid it out upon the ground, is there a single thing you could point to and say, "Yes, that is a chariot"?

[00:03] <Yaiko> Such, Nagasena said, is the Self. The self is a designation, a convenient name, but there are a bazillion things that go into it and none of them are definitively the self.
[00:05] <Yaiko> Thus, belief in one's Self as a Thing, separate from the Universe and unchanging, is an illusion-- and we already know what Buddhists say about illusions.
[00:05] <Celeste> Indeed.
[00:07] <Matsumi Kaze> and I'm trying to be nice
[00:08] <Melanie Asher> ..what do you want since you're being so nice?
[00:08] <Celeste> How would one wake up?
[00:08] <Yaiko> And as such, they distinguish between a belief in oneself, and a belief in one's Self.
[00:08] <Yaiko> That... is a trickier question.
[00:09] <Matsumi Kaze> nothing??
[00:09] <Matsumi Kaze> I just want to see that you're feeling better?
[00:09] <Yaiko> Theravada practice prescribes routine practice. Meditation. Recitation of the sutras. There are two 'end goals' they see, and both of them are in all likelihood attained over the practice of many, many, many, lives.
[00:09] * The Magistra walks into her TARDIS and returns with a box adressed to Eitak.
[00:10] <Yaiko> One, they will come to an Awakening as the Buddha did: a strange and perfect realization of the impermanence of the world, extinguishing the fear, desire, and hate within themselves as they realize the impermanence of the self.
[00:11] * The Magistra sets it on a table and places a ward on it.
[00:11] <Yaiko> Alternately, they will be so fortunate as to hear and pursue the teaching while the teacher, or a reasonably and usefully-intact collection of the teacher's teachings, and use that as a sort of springboard to their own Awakening as an arhat.
[00:13] <Melanie Asher> Well I am. Does that make you happy?
[00:13] * Melanie Asher heads into the restaurant
[00:13] <Yaiko> Because the awakening of a Buddha is so incredibly rare, it's subsequently important to take advantage of the teachings while they're there, because there isn't going to be another chance for a long time.
[00:14] <Yaiko> Mahayana doctrine, by contrast, sees chasing the path of the arhat as something of a cop-out.
[00:16] <Matsumi Kaze> oh?
[00:17] * Celeste nods, understanding.
[00:18] <Yaiko> If the Buddha awakened, they argue, so can everyone. With the right work, the right energy, the right practice, the right thought, anyone can awaken.
[00:19] <Yaiko> And furthermore, they argue, an entity that has awakened is necessarily aware of the state of the universe: a place where countless, innumerable, teeming masses are suffering without recourse.
[00:20] <Matsumi Kaze> so..the difference is...how unique awakening is?
[00:20] <Yaiko> A difference, and one of the more significant ones, but not the only one between the two schools.
[00:21] <Yaiko> They also say that an entity that has no compassion for these teeming masses is not truly awakened. Thus, they vow to seek awakening, and rather than pass into nirvana, they will instead remain upon the world to assist the teeming masses in their own time.
[00:21] <Matsumi Kaze> I know hideki once tried to explain it to me....still don't fully grasp it
[00:22] <Matsumi Kaze> isn't there a term for that..a bod...bodhi.....gah
[00:22] <Yaiko> The bodhisattva path.
[00:22] <Matsumi Kaze> yes that!
[00:22] <Celeste> Boddhisatva, right?
[00:22] <Yaiko> And the bodhisattva vow.
[00:23] * Melanie Asher is away 
[00:24] <Celeste> The route you've mentioned for yourself before, if I recall correctly.
[00:24] <Yaiko> Something akin, yes. ♫
[00:25] <Matsumi Kaze> what..you took that vow?
[00:25] <Yaiko> Buddhist mythology ascribes all sorts of supernatural powers that come to those who are sufficiently awake, and it is from these stories that you get notions of the Amitabha, or Kwan-yin, or Pure Land.
[00:25] <Yaiko> I haven't. Not specifically. But it's a compelling notion and I might end up living it at some point.
[00:26] * Matsumi Kaze nods
[00:27] <Yaiko> Even the most powerful among the divine bow their head to the bodhisattva, if the divine are wise enough to do so.
[00:28] <Celeste> Might be selfish but something I'm curious of
[00:29] <Matsumi Kaze> how would you know a bodhisattva if you saw one?
[00:29] <Yaiko> And though there is still effectively infinity left to go, the bodhisattva move still further onward.
[00:30] * Celeste thinks of how to word it
[00:30] <Yaiko> Honestly, that would depend on the bodhisattva. The stories credit them with miraculous powers, and a sense of purpose and peace that brings calm to those whom they interact with...
[00:31] <Celeste> I always recall non attachment related to Buddhism.
[00:31] * Matsumi Kaze nods
[00:31] <Celeste> Since attachment leads to suffering.
[00:32] <Yaiko> Mm hmm?
[00:32] <Celeste> Can you love someone and still take that path?
[00:34] <Yaiko> Mmmm.
[00:34] <Yaiko> It is, all too often, a distraction.
[00:35] <Yaiko> There's a reason most ordination sects prescribe celibacy-- not because love is inherently bad, but because love in its many attendant forms is very, very easy to be a distraction.
[00:36] <Yaiko> Most sects don't outright go and say it, but there's generally a good reason most ordained sects prescribe monastic separation by sex and celibacy.
[00:38] <Yaiko> Even Siddhartha, the man responsible for starting All This, had to leave his family which by all accounts he was very fond of.
[00:40] <Yaiko> But, then again, you get the Ch'an/Zen branches, which have their own take on things.
[00:42] <Yaiko> Zen starts with the basic idea of Mahayana: anyone can snap awake, under the right circumstances-- which is, usually, the right practice.
[00:42] * Celeste tilts her head
[00:43] <Yaiko> But rather than seek what they would call 'some exalted state of awareness', they focus their attention on simply removing distractions from their life.
[00:45] <Celeste> But is it not a distraction as was just said?
[00:45] <Yaiko> The Zen practice I empathize with is what's called 'everyday zen'.
[00:46] <Yaiko> If you aim for enlightenment, you're already thinking of your Self as a coherent, meaningful thing.
[00:47] <Yaiko> They say the past is dead, and the future will never come. What has happened will not happen again. What you think is going to happen is a distraction from what is actually and already happening.
[00:48] <Yaiko> The fewer preconceptions you have about anything, the fewer distractions you have in your life, the fewer attachments and illusions you will have in the pursuit of doing it.
[00:49] <Yaiko> The less you let your brain screw around, the more effective in life you will be.
[00:49] <Yaiko> Chop wood, carry water.
[00:50] <Yaiko> A master named Hotei, renowned for carrying a heavy sack full of toys and sweets for the children, was asked by passers-by who recognized him: "Master, what is the realization of Zen?"
[00:51] <Yaiko> Hotei set down the sack.
[00:51] <Yaiko> He was asked again: "Then, Master, what is the actualization of Zen?"
[00:51] <Matsumi Kaze> isn't he one of the seven gods of good luck?
[00:51] <Yaiko> Hotei picked up his sack and went right on his way.
[00:51] <Yaiko> Often attributed, yes. I couldn't tell you if it's the same person or not.
