[23:37] * Celeste brings her fingers up and spirals on her collarbone.
[23:38] <Yaiko> For what felt like an age and a day, I wandered free, indulging myself in finding and discarding new truths, sensations, terrors, liberating myself from the idea that anything had to matter to me anymore.
[23:39] * Victoria Smithson looks around the ceiling :O
[23:39] <Yaiko> But as time wore on, I began to realize I was not merely hallucinating when I saw things moving in the corners, or caught a vision of hair-thin worms in a beam of dust that nobody else could see, or that I could dimly perceive the dull, distant throb of the world beneath my feet.
[23:41] <Yaiko> And that there were very much things that looked back at me when I saw them. Things I couldn't find the words to describe because I at best knew snatches of Latin and a few Spanish vulgarities beyond the English I'd been raised in.
[23:43] <Yaiko> So I sought lessons and information, though little came easily. I'd just brushed the surface of the wider world-- and as I've mentioned before, the West and especially the United States takes great measures to keep the world beyond the perceptible out of sight and mind.

[23:45] <Yaiko> I had my fair share of being run out of bookstores by shopkeepers and staying on the run from federal agents, but I also learned bits and pieces and scraps of information that let me piece together the formula for something called the Dust of Ibn-Gazi.
[23:46] <Yaiko> The Powder, when spread in the air, reveals that which is imperceptible; it's an excellent way to track things. Presences. Spirits.
[23:47] * Zept smiles and hugs carefully
[23:47] <Yaiko> The first I revealed, when I felt something creeping up on me out of the corner of my skin, I cast the powder into the air and revealed a spirit that had been watching me for some time...
[23:49] <Joanna Smithson> ..I was so worried..with victoria..that you would..walk away from me
[23:49] <Yaiko> ...no mere spirit, but a wandering mindform-spirithaunt-thing. She was surprised to see I had pieced together how to perceive her, though she asked me the question: Now that I knew, what was I going to do about it?
[23:49] * Celeste tilts her head.
[23:50] <Yaiko> I didn't have an answer. She smiled at me, and said, "If you would have more than this, remain where you are and I shall find you myself, to show you how to become a master of things great and small."
[23:52] * Victoria Smithson has fallen asleep
[23:52] <Joanna Smithson> hey zept...let me put vicki to bed..I'll be back, ok?
[23:53] <Yaiko> I was too much of a fool to be afraid and too young to believe I was capable of being hurt by anything she knew, so I lingered until she came in the flesh.

[23:56] <Yaiko> Her name was Satreiya. She was a khadi herself, though from a different age; she had cast her awareness into the ether, seeking something worthy to spend her time on in the way that only the ancient and the bored really seek, and she found me, working from little magics. I was young enough to be impressed that she was beautiful, intelligent, and clever, and knew so much more of the world than I.

[23:57] <Yaiko> She invited me into her bodoir, which lay pressed beyond the veil of space and time such that any who knew the key to enter could join her.
[23:58] * Celeste waggles her eyebrows.
[23:59] <Yaiko> Satreiya came from an age where those who lived on Earth knew that there were things outside of the harmony of god and mortal, and to have power over these was often to have power in defiance of divine intention and plan. Given the capriciousness of the gods, who casually bestow and revoke their favor as pleases them, such capacity was true, reliable power-- so long as one obeyed its precepts, and never valued anything else more than their power.
[00:00] <Yaiko> In the eyes of those sorcerers, to value anything beyond their power was to become stagnant, and unable to achieve more than they had, until they made a knowing and deliberate sacrifice of it or consumed it for themselves.
[00:03] <Yaiko> I knew nothing of this, being sheltered as I was; these wonders and marvels she showed me were curiosities and intellectual exercises rather than resources, which was probably why I survived as I did through the lessons.

[00:04] <Yaiko> She told me she was looking for a student, someone to bear a legacy more lasting than any child of hers would ever leave. As she had been taught by her own master, in days I would never see.

[00:07] * Celeste frowns and brings herself closer to Yai.
[00:08] <Yaiko> I was not the first she had lured back, with honeyed words and promises of study, and in the beginning she kept her word as bound. I learned the names of lands forgotten to the modern day, the stories of the gods they worshipped, and of the great war ten thousand years ago that broke the civilizations that lived there-- places we now know as Lemuria and Mu and Atlantis and a dozen places beside.

[00:11] <Yaiko> I learned the names of the Great Old Ones and the Outer Gods whom they are in thrall to at her knee, while she stroked my hair and indulged my thousand questions. I was hungry for understanding, and she parceled her insight in fractions and parcels.

[00:13] * Joanna Smithson leans happily against Zept
[00:14] <Yaiko> And soon enough, she began asking favors of me. Small things I did not think of. Preparations. Beliefs. Behaviors. In exchange for a vision of glory, a promise kept.
[00:14] <Yaiko> A secret maintained.
[00:14] <Celeste> Preparations for...?
[00:15] * Zept puts an arm around her
[00:15] <Joanna Smithson> mmm I miss this ^^
[00:16] <Yaiko> The darker things she did, and the dirtier secrets she trafficked in.
[00:18] <Yaiko> Satreiya hailed from the time when the khadi enjoyed a stranglehold over what we know as the Middle East, in the years before the coming of Mohammed, in the days before the penning of the Necronomicon.
[00:20] <Yaiko> To say it was a bloody time would be to understate the matter. Horrors stalked the streets by night and by day, and preyed upon the guilty and innocent alike.
[00:20] * Celeste nods
[00:20] <Yaiko> She had visitors to the Palace Beyond, and though I was never to attend their private discussions, when she taught me how to spy on her enemies, she did not think I would use that power to spy on her as well.
[00:21] * Joanna Smithson just keeps leaning against zept, closing her eyes
[00:23] <Yaiko> It was in those private conversations that I learned I was not the first.
[00:23] <Yaiko> Nor, her visitors suspected, would I be the last.
[00:24] * Celeste frowns
[00:24] <Yaiko> The name Akma was always on their lips.
[00:25] <Yaiko> They were never specific enough that I could glean who he had been to her. A father? A son? A husband? A lover?
[00:25] <Yaiko> And I couldn't ask without revealing I had been looking into her conversations when she had forbidden me to listen.
[00:26] <Yaiko> I liked her because I thought she had been generous to an innocent out of the kindness of her own heart, but then as the stories multiplied, I thought better of asking her and asked that which served her.
[00:29] <Yaiko> She had developed a habit, you see. She found students. She enticed them with knowledge. When they were ripe, she performed the cardioectomy on them, intending to preserve them for her pleasure for ever and ever.
[00:29] <Yaiko> As she had tried to preserve Akma, long ago.
[00:31] <Celeste> But you were already khadi...
[00:32] <Yaiko> Perhaps she thought I would not spoil so quickly because I had already become something else.
[00:32] <Yaiko> She had been looking for novelty, after all, and then she found it. Perhaps she thought to bind me to her will with something new and frightful.
[00:33] <Yaiko> Akma betrayed her and took his heart from under her nose, and became one of her bitterest enemies. The students she took afterwards, to the last, sought to steal themselves from under her nose, though none succeeded and all were destroyed for their presumption.
[00:34] <Joanna Smithson> mmm
[00:35] <Yaiko> And... in time, she came to know that I knew.
[00:35] * Celeste holds her close
[00:35] <Yaiko> And that was enough for her to become fearful that I would do the same.
[00:37] <Yaiko> Her demands became more demanding. Her scrutiny became closer. She began watching me as though I were a thief in her house.
[00:39] <Yaiko> She expected betrayal. Eventually she had it.
[00:40] * Zept snuggles. He looks relaxed
[00:42] * Joanna Smithson looks extremenly happy
[00:42] <Yaiko> I left. I thought about breaking things, to show my displeasure, but it occurred to me that silent absence-- especially in the wake of one of her enemies' appearances-- would turn her attention to them rather than to me.
[00:43] <Yaiko> She had lured me to her side with sweetness, but how many secrets would they share with me that she would not? That I know she would not? How hungry was I for power that I would betray her, and her without an easy means of disposing of me?
[00:45] <Yaiko> So I slipped away.
[00:45] <Yaiko> And didn't go back.
[00:46] <Celeste> Will she ever try to find you?
[00:47] * Joanna Smithson looks to Zept for a bit
[00:47] <Celeste> Or have you been forgotten?
[00:47] <Yaiko> It's hard to say.
[00:48] <Yaiko> Rather, it's complicated.
[00:48] <Celeste> Mmmm?
[00:49] <Yaiko> Some time after I'd left, I went to the Middle East and began looking there for clues to what had been, if the khadi were still an active force in the world, what I could learn from any survivors... and, as it turns out, they weren't, and I couldn't.

[00:50] <Yaiko> I put together things after the fact, and apparently I timed my exit very well. Mohammed had planted the seeds of Islam and rallied the people under the truth of Allah, and there was no room for heathens who practiced sinister sorcery against those who feared God.

[00:51] <Joanna Smithson> ..what do you think of our relationship?
[00:51] <Yaiko> And the teachings then carried word of just how to slay the monsters that lurked in the shadows.
[00:54] <Yaiko> In a hundred years, the last of the khadi were dead.
